biography about me

Eef Veldkamp is a young Dutch artist who focuses on the systems and structures we live in. Society is a most complex phenomenon: we’re surrounded by systems and structures that make living together possible. These systems and structures are to be found on every scale, in between individuals, but also in relation to society or politics, even though we often don’t even notice them - we’ve embodied them. Eventually our hole society exists in the grace of all terms and conditions we’ve developed through time, nevertheless people unconditionally come together. This often results in wonderful events, interesting situations and complex problems: that’s why it’s so important to keep questioning and exploring these unconscious systems and structures. Nonetheless we’re part of them, and they are part of us. In my practice I distillate the friction points in these systems and structures which I try to understand through artistic research. But every system and structure that we have made up ourselves can also be changed. So purely reflecting on them doesn’t quench my thirst, I try to find or create ways to engage with these questions and problem in order to maybe change them or find alternatives, often in collaboration with others. This often results in small companies, initiatives and events which are especially erected, designed and organized for these specific problems, of course with an artistic wink. I use these platforms as a method or context of working resulting is publications, artworks, events, workshops: anything that seems to be necessary. Consequences

Counter-systems

Connection Lost: how is power distributed? How is power accessed? Sometimes it seems that form has overcome content. In a world based on facade power has a double connotation, it has become harder to have access to but it has become easier to misuse; contemporary media offer the perfect platform.

De Visionarissen: is an adaptive initiative focussing on the interdisciplinary production of knowledge about contemporary theme's, both personal and on a larger scale, through art(practises).

- ruru buitendienst -

The ruru buitendienst: (ruru fieldwork) is a group of artist and researchers from Arnhem who examine the notion of public space in Arnhem as in phenomenon, people and places; i.e. the users of the city, different kinds of ownership, transgression, youth culture, time and visible and invisible power structures which dictator our everyday life. The ruru buitendienst also does fieldwork and organizes public events. It consists of: Egbert Bouwhuis, Marit van Dijk, Saskya Kamps, Sanne Oorthuizen, Eef Veldkamp, Sanne de Vries.

Back Alley Finder: is a online platform where users can tag alleys. They can anonymously add stories, photo's and videos, adding and mapping the international structure of alleys and what happens in there, which I consider to be the border-area's of our society.

Grensverlegger van het jaar 2016: this award, which is made of brass has been awarded to the grensverlegger van het jaar 2016 - the person that won the colouring competition. All the winners were invited to a special event explicitly designed for them. With elegance they have been brought to Burgers Zoo, where together with employees of the zoo we've studied the animals, their way of living together and their enclosures relating them to our contemporary society. Soon you'll be able to listen a podcast of this day.

Eerste Hulp Bij Politiek: is a free hotline which politicians can call with al their political questions.

Con-paign II: is a post-modernistic research into the language of political campaign.

Vrijbrief: is a series of workshops in a prison in the Netherlands. It is a sequel to 13,80m2 with which we started our research into stereotypes and prison. Prison is a secularised discourse, meaning that everything we know about it is based on movies and fantasies. We tried to bridge this gap together with the prisoners, resulting in a monument for society.

Revised Edition: The flag is the symbol of national pride. We hug, wear or burn the flag on occasions which reflect national importance. They give colour and reflect, in their use, diversity. Though most flag are of many colours, they do rest on spaces of black and white – contrast colours.

Boundary Shifters Medal: are 100 custom made medals which are awarded only to people with a very social, political conscious practise who try to change the world through subversive or unorthodox methods - al in aim for a positive change. Do you know anyone, who meets these requirements? Send a mail to info@vakbondvoortransgressie.org.

This Totalitaire Rubric: is an evaluation system with which you can determine whether and to what extend you are living in a totalitarian dictatorship. the form is based on 'Wat is totalitaire dictatuur'.

Wat is totalitaire dictatuur: is an research into totalitarian dictatorship in which I examine the traits of totalitarianism and try to refer it to democracy.

This beautiful, hand made protest sign, has been specially designed to carry your message. Your message will be hand painted on by an artist. The stem of this sign is made of durable wood, the board is made of foam board and the lettering is hand-painted - for an authentic feel.

Burn-a-flag: the flag is a symbol of national pride and dissent. Burning a flag is often the symbolic centre of protest, both as an empowering symbol, as well as the object that represents what is ‘bad’. Yet many flags today are made from fire resistant materials. Therefore, the PSS has designed a series of handmade candles in the shape of  flags, so that one can burn a flag at home – and these always burns.

Deface-a-statue: defacement is a very contemporary issue in protest. Many statues are controversial, but defacing them is controversial as well. Therefore the PSS has designed a series of  small statues which will fall down when you press a button at the bottom.

Dictator(ship): a performance, an exhibition and a panel discussion into artistic political subversion through dictatorship.

This Transgressieformulier: subverts the 'European Damage-from' used to report on car crashes into a form to denote and reflect upon transgressive situations. When send to the VvT, the best will be picked who will receive the Grensverlegger van het Jaar 2018-award.

Arc de Triomphe: what's space and how is it divided, what gives space a function and are there spaces without function, function for who? About the urban blood system and transgression

To Lose Power Over Power: a film of two teleprompter's. The right dictates a correspondence and the left dictates an analysis of this correspondence. Text        , video

to lose power over power

Con-paign: concerning the political dilemma of shape vs. content, content vs. discontent, I've pasted these throughout the city during the election period, within a day they we're pasted over again.

Common Grounds. What is common ground? What's commonality anyway? Which ground does not have political colour? Where is anything  possible and everyone welcome? Is there such a place and what's our part in it? Should there even be such a place? In this exhibition artworks are distributed through three 'fake' villages: a Christian, an Islamic and a Jewish village.

Graffiti walk: out of respect for these icon-makers of the city, and to support them on an artistic level, we've done a walk through Arnhem's 'Hall of Fame': the place for graffiti and mutual competition between the artists. We have helped them exceed their practices and help them increase the quality of their artworks by assessing their artworks.

The Plakzuilactie: What would people do if they could out themselves completely uncensored and anonymous? What if they are offered a chance to do that in the public domain, with graffiti. A form of expression that's often used by street-artist but that's best know for its reputation for being a method of vandalizing.

Subversive Future Development: is a workshop in which participants are asked to develop a plan which is by principle forbidden but which does adress and hopefully help resolve a problem which the participants have brought themselves. Through artistic methods and roleplaying they develop a plan, just like any other plan, with aspects as finance to implementation.

An alley is a interesting urban place. due to it’s size and it’s bad circumstances it doesn’t really have a function: it’s impossible to have a shop or house there. Therefore the alley is one of the only places in the urban environment that doesn’t really have a function an jet, so much happens there. Especially because it doesn’t have a function it offers platform for everyone that doesn’t really have a place in society, or people that are planning to break the rules: uri- nation in public, drug use even public sex. I see the alley a capillary of the urban blood system, it’s the smallest of the small blood vessels and it’s closest to our skin, and not unimportant: it’s where metabolism happens.
